July August September October November December January February March April May June August Transitioning from PECS to Speech Generated Devices (SGDs) 8/4/2026 - 8:00am - 3:30pm Location: Lexington Campus 2331 Fortune Dr. Lexington, KY 40509 Target Audience: Special Ed teachers, special education instructional coaches, Speech/ Language Pathologists Description: This training will provide you with practical information for helping learners successfully transition from The Picture Exchange Communication System® (PECS®) to Speech Generating Devices (SGDs). After mastering vital communication skills such as initiation, persistence in relaying messages, picture discrimination and basic sentence structure, learners often have large repertoires of pictures stored in their communication book. To accommodate larger vocabularies and allow for continued language development, the team may next explore a transition to a dedicated Speech Generating Device (SGD) or tablet with communication app. During this training, we will show your team how to assess current PECS skills and analyze the features of available apps and SGDs in order to make the selection best suited to your learner's needs, ensuring a rapid transfer of existing communication skills. Once we’ve considered relevant options for device or app selection, we will guide you in the detailed lesson planning necessary to teach use of the new device as a functional communication system to ensure SGD users maintain effective communication skills! Whether you are just getting started or you want to enhance your approach to teaching with an SGD already in place, this workshop will give you evidence-based teaching strategies and insights to maximize your learner's transition to and use of an SGD. *Please bring a Speech Generating Device (SGD) or a tablet with an AAC app to the training to use during a variety of activities. Mental Health & Trauma Bounce 101: Introduction to ACES and Trauma Informed Practices 2 Hours of PD or EILA Credit People face many stressors that can have a life-long impact on their ability to thrive. Yet it is possible to foster resilience, equipping people with the tools to effectively respond to adversity and bounce back. This on demand module supports this goal by increasing understanding of the lifelong impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and building individual and organizational skills to nurture resilience. You will encounter materials that foster trauma-informed approaches to serving your students and caregivers. This module is for people that are early in their understanding of ACES and Trauma Informed Practices. Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Reporting 1 Hour of PD Credit In this on-demand module, participants will learn about common indicators of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and human trafficking. Developing a Comprehensive School Counseling Program 6 Hours of PD or EILA Credit In this self-paced, on-demand module, participants will learn to: identify the three sets of standards that help school counselors develop, implement, and assess their school counseling program; manage and analyze data for continuous program improvement, determine annual student outcome goals, and access and utilize a variety of tools to support the management of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program (CSCP); explain the elements of the Deliver component within the ASCA National Model and differentiate between direct and indirect student services; and use available data to determine program effectiveness and inform improvements to their school counseling program design and delivery. Digging Deeper into Mindfulness 4 Hours of PD or EILA Credit This on-demand professional development is meant to support additional understanding of Mindfulness in school. No wonder we feel stressed out and overwhelmed, and living life on high alert. Handle with Care 1 Hour of PD or EILA Credit Handle With Care is a collaborative initiative between law enforcement and schools to address possible exposure to traumatic events. This self-paced, on-demand module can typically be completed within one hour and will result in one hour of EILA credit. Noncompliance in the Classroom and Educational Setting 3 Hours of PD Credit This session will be on practical behavior and academic strategies used to effectively work with students who have been diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder or who are just noncompliant. Working with students who have control issues can be an extremely frustrating task; however, when one has a clear understanding of the disorder, it is much easier to identify the function of inappropriate behavior and to design appropriate interventions to ensure student success. Suicide Prevention and Intervention 1 Hour of PD or EILA Credit In this on-demand module, participants will learn about the prevalence of suicide in the US and Kentucky. Participants will gain an understanding of common risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors as it relate to suicidal ideation. Resources will be shared for screening and interventions. This module may fulfill the KRS 156.095 requirement for suicide prevention and intervention. Using Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategies 1 Hour PD Credit In this module, participants will be introduced to why teaching students to use cognitive and metacognitive strategies, strategies to be implemented that promote student thinking at different levels. Participants will also be given resources that will provide guidance on supporting cognitive and metacognitive strategies, Using Numberless World Problems in Math Class 1 Hour of PD Credit This online module will provide teachers with strategies to help students with metacognition with solving application problems in math class. There will be a focus on using numberless word problems during this online module. This technique allows students to understand what is happening conceptually with a real-world scenario before numbers are introduced. This scaffolded approach affords students who struggle with the first steps in mathematics entry into the math task. Using Worked Examples in Math Class 3 Hours of PD Credit Worked examples are an evidence-based strategy to use in the mathematics classroom for multi-step problems. This module will introduce you to using worked examples (sometimes called solved problems) in your classroom. The outcomes for the module are: Increased knowledge of worked examples Research behind them Various types How to create and teach with them Deepened understanding of High Leverage Practices for Special Education HLP 12 HLP 15 Visible Thinking Strategies 1 Hour of PD Credit This online, self-paced module defines and explains visible thinking strategies teachers can use to foster critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. Participants will finish this module with a variety of routines and strategies they can utilize in their classrooms to develop students’ ability to make their thinking visible. Vocabulary Routine 1.5 Hours of PD Credit The purpose of this virtual session is for educators to further develop a routine for intentionally selecting appropriate vocabulary and to acquire steps for effective planning and delivery of explicit instruction, whether in a virtual or in-person setting. Working Memory and Retrieval Practices 3 Hours of PD Students with learning disabilities and students affected by trauma or poverty may likely demonstrate characteristics of poor working memory. A few of the behaviors that may manifest include not following step-by-step instructions, difficulty in completing tasks or working independently, and a lack of retention of information. This self-paced module will provide a background on the causes of working memory deficits and will provide classroom strategies to support successful student learning. Writing Using Mentor Texts 2 Hours of PD Credit This virtual training will cover writing using mentor text for middle and high school students. IT will review why we use mentor texts, sharing a variety of sites and examples of mentor texts, and the process of planning a writing unit. Your Roadmap to Reading Success: Using the KY Standards with Intention 2 Hours of PD Credit Join us for an interactive training designed to help educators unlock the power of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Reading. This session will guide you step-by-step through understanding the structure of the reading standards, identifying essential skills, and aligning instruction to help all students reach grade-level expectations. Literacy Comprehension Strategies for Secondary Students with Disabilities 1.5 Hours of PD Credit This online self-paced module will provide an overview and implementation suggestions of three different reading comprehension strategies geared for students in grades 6-12. Dialogic Reading 1.5 Hours of PD Credit Dialogic Reading is a self-paced module allowing participants to earn 1 ½ hours of PD credit. Strategies are appropriate for struggling writers in grades 3-12 and can be applied in any content area. Supporting Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities to Write 3 Hours of PD Credit This online learning module will provide strategies for school staff working with students with moderate to severe disabilities to create writing pieces. The module contains a one-hour self-paced learning video, front-loading of information prior to watching the video, and passing a post-test to earn three hours of professional development credit. Using AI for Student Access in Reading 1.5 Hours of PD Credit Creating adapted text is essential for our students with disabilities. Unsure of how to do that? Let articifial intelligence (AI) do it for you! This 1.5-hour self-paced module will walk you through how to get AI to create and/or adapt text for your students.
