Accommodations & Modifications: What’s the Difference?

The words Accommodations and Modifications are often used interchangeably for students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs).  There are MAJOR differences between the two.  This self-paced learning module will clarify distinctions between Accommodations and Modifications.  After completion of the module participants will receive 2 Professional Development and EILA hours.  

 

Comprehension Strategies for Secondary Students with Disabilities

1.5 Hours of PD Credit
 

This online self-paced module will provide an overview and implementation suggestions of three different reading comprehension strategies geared for students in grades 6-12.
 

Constant Time Delay

1.5 Hours of PD Credit

This module was created to describe how to use the constant time delay strategy.  This strategy can be used for both academic and behavioral skills.

 

Co-Teaching for the Math Classroom

2 Hours of EILA Credit

 

This online module has the following outcomes:

  • Brief overview of co-teaching

  • Hear about examples of how the various co-teaching approaches might be used in the mathematics classroom at all levels (elementary, middle, high school)

  • Develop implementation ideas for your own classroom

  • Opportunity to explore resources related to co-teaching​

Creating Behavior Magic: Using SDI to Create Change

1 Hour of PD or EILA Credit

In this one-hour on-demand module, participants will learn the basics of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) as it pertains to behavior. Participants will also be introduced to the SDI for Behavior Toolkit.

​Deeper Understanding of KAS Math Alternate Assessment Progressions and Targets

3 Hours of PD Credit
 

This online learning module will support school staff in understanding the Alternate Assessment Math Progressions. The module contains a one-hour self-paced learning video, front-loading of information prior to watching the self-paced video, and passing of a post-test to earn the three hours of PD credit.

 

Engagement Tools for the MSD Classroom

1.5 Hours of PD Credit

 

This 1 ½ hour self paced module shows multiple ways to increase student engagement in the MSD classroom (and other settings) using different pieces of assistive technology. We discuss switches, a computer interface, mounting devices, and a variety of websites. You will find helpful videos, information on lending libraries, printable communication boards, and much more. â€‹â€‹

​IEP Process and Data Collection for Paraprofessionals

2 Hours of PD Credit

 

This is an on-demand training session on the IEP process and data collection for paraprofessionals.

Topics will include:

  • IEP goals and objectives.

  • Data collection — formal & informal.

  • Anecdotal records.

  • Defining behaviors.

  • Checklists, frequency, interval, duration, and latency data collection/recording systems.

  • Graphing methods

From Bigger to Greater: Precision in Math Language

1 Hour PD Credit

Earn 1 hour PD credit with this self-paced online module designed to help teachers deepen students’ math understanding. Explore the power of precise math vocabulary, learn strategies to teach and reinforce it, and discover the difference between everyday language and math-specific terms to support all learners.

 

Kentucky Academic Standards and Alternate Assessment Targets

3 Hours of PD Credit
 

In this training series, you will be exploring the revised KY academic standards in relation to alternate assessment targets and resources available to teachers to help you deepen your understanding of the standards’ big ideas and key concepts. The training plan is divided into three (3) phases that will be released over the Summer and Fall of 2020.

Making Literacy Accessible for All through Adapting Text

3 Hours of PD Credit
 

Do you have students who struggle accessing text in typical formats (i.e. chapter books, a lot of words and content, textbooks)?  This self-guided/paced online training, Making Literacy Accessible for ALL Students through Adapting Text,  is developed for school staff working with students with disabilities who struggle to access text in typical formats.  Participants will be guided through steps to adapt the text for their students with a variety of disabilities to increase participation in literacy experiences (i.e. decrease text but not content, add pictures for understanding, include engagement questions).

Navigating the Literacy SDI Tools​

This self-paced module explores the Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) Tools for Literacy. The tool was developed to help educators improve the quality and selection of specially designed instruction while strengthening connections across IEP goals, progress monitoring, and Kentucky Academic Standards.

Online Learning Tools to Support SDI and Accommodations (You will love!)

This is a self-paced module to introduce participants to nine online learning tools that can either assist students in their individual learning or assist teachers with planning engaging classroom assignments. Participants will not only experience tutorials for the tools but will also engage in tasks using some of them. Participants will be expected to complete a brief “project” using one of the resources to demonstrate learning. Students will benefit from these tools in both in-person and virtual learning environments.

Presuming Competence

1 1/2 Hours PD Credit

Presuming competence in special education means consistently assuming that all students, including those with disabilities, are capable of learning and making progress.  This module provides background knowledge regarding presuming competence and strategies that will aid in maximizing abilities and removing barriers to learning.

​Postsecondary Readiness and Alternate Assessment (CWEC and ESAR)

2 Hours of PD Credit

Do you have questions about transition or the career/work experience certification for your students who participate in alternate assessment? This online module was made for you! In this module, participants will learn about transition components of the alternate assessment, including the transition attainment record (TAR), career work/experience certification (CWEC), and employability skills attainment record (ESAR). This session is perfect for new high school MSD teachers or high school MSD teachers who need a refresher on requirements, scheduling, and documenting career/work experiences for their students.

​Post-Secondary Transition Compliance (Indicator 13)

2 Hours of PD or EILA Credit

​

This two-hour on-demand module will help you learn the essentials of post-secondary transition planning. Participants will learn how to create comprehensive, compliant, and impactful transition plans for students with disabilities. Upon completion of the module, participants will be awarded two hours of PD or EILA credit.

​Progress Monitoring for the IEP

3 Hours of PD or EILA Credit
 

This self-paced module will provide a step-by-step process for progress monitoring of IEP goals. CKEC is providing IEP progress monitoring training in two parts. This part is designed to be self-paced. Upon completion of the self-paced module, participants should register for the follow-up Zoom session. Restructured High-Leverage Practices for Students with Disabilities

Roadmap to Math Success: Using the Kentucky Standards with Intention

Up to 3 Hours of PD Credit

Earn up to 3 hours of PD credit with this self-paced online module exploring the Kentucky Academic Standards and their connection to IEPs, Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), and effective co-teaching strategies. Learn how to align standards with inclusive practices to support all learners.

So, I’m a Special Ed Teacher in a High School Math Class…Now What?

Do your special needs students struggle to learn math in high school? Do you want to build your instructional toolbox with strategies for adapting and modifying high school math content? This self-paced module will provide resources and ideas for working with special needs students in a high school math classroom (resource, co-teaching, etc.). Particular attention will be given to strategies that can be used across courses (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2).

​Supporting Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities to Write

This online learning module will provide strategies for school staff working with students with moderate to severe disabilities to create writing pieces. The module contains a one-hour self-paced learning video, front-loading of information prior to watching the video, and passing a post-test to earn three hours of professional development credit.
 

​The Write Stuff: Evidence-Based Writing Interventions

1.5 Hours of PD Credit

 

In some ways, writing is rocket science. Lots of things need to go right for students to express themselves. This session will look specifically at text writing, the skill of composing multiple works that make sense into sentences and paragraphs. In this session, you’ll learn how to design and deliver evidence-based interventions to improve the handwriting, spelling, sentence writing, and story/essay writing of K-12 students with disabilities.

​Two Teachers, One Classroom: A Co-Teaching Overview

2 Hours of PD or EILA Credit

​

Co-teaching is a collaborative approach to instruction in which two teachers, typically a general education teacher and a special education teacher, work together to plan and then implement instruction for a class that includes students with disabilities. In this self-paced module, you will build an understanding of what co-teaching is and why we use this service delivery option for our students with disabilities.

​​

​Two Teachers, One Classroom: Parallel Teaching

1 Hour of PD or EILA Credit

​

Parallel teaching is a co-teaching approach in which two teachers divide the students into two groups and lead the same instruction to both groups. In this self-paced module, you will learn how to implement parallel teaching, why you might use this approach, and barriers you might encounter when using parallel teaching.

​Two Teachers, One Classroom: Team Teaching 

1 Hour of PD or EILA Credit

​

Team teaching is a co-teaching approach in which two teachers are both in front of the classroom, sharing the responsibility of leading instruction.  In this self-paced module, you will learn how to implement team teaching, why you might use this approach, and barriers you might encounter when using team teaching.

Your Roadmap to Reading Success: Using the KY Standards with Intention

2 Hours of PD Credit

Join us for an interactive training designed to help educators unlock the power of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Reading. This session will guide you step-by-step through understanding the structure of the reading standards, identifying essential skills, and aligning instruction to help all students reach grade-level expectations.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Navigate and break down the KAS Reading Standards document
     

  • Identify the skills students need to master grade-level standards
     

  • Connect standards to meaningful IEP goals and specially designed instruction (SDI)
     

  • Use data to determine priorities and address learning gaps
