6-25-18 Lions and Tigers and Numbers, Oh My!—Teaching Early Numeracy with Literature- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
This hands-on workshop will develop the conceptual foundations of addition and subtraction by using literature as the lens by which to enter into mathematics. Counting and cardinality, problem structures, number composition and more will be examined. The use of various tasks and activities to promote understanding and fluency will be shared and created. In addition, we will explore differentiation and formative assessment strategies related to building numeracy and number sense. Participants will leave with an action plan and resources to use in the classroom.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop.
6-26 and 6-27-18 Multisensory Language Toolkit- $35 Fee for Member Districts, $100 Fee for Non Member Districts
The Language Toolkit and Recipe for Reading are tools for explicit, systematic multisensory instruction. This session will train teachers in the Language Toolkit component from the Multisensory Literacy Instruction series. The toolkit can be used with individual students or small groups of students to teach visual and auditory recognition of letters and sounds as well as blending and segmenting. Teachers will receive materials to implement the intervention immediately.
6-26-18 Finding the Hidden Strengths: An Asset Based Approach to Working with Students- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
All students have strengths – even though they may be hidden. This session will help you identify the strengths that students bring with them. Strategies will be shared to help school staff use an asset based approach that focuses on student’s strengths and resiliency.
6-29-18 Stress Less : Integrating Mindfulness and Movement into School Culture- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
Research shows that “relaxed students learn better and relaxed teachers teach better”. In this session participants will explore research around mindfulness for students and staff. Participants will build a toolkit full of strategies for reducing stress, increasing focused attention and integrating mindful movement in the classroom. We will also explore various breath practices and movement for students with various disabilities and emotional and behavioral needs. The session will also include exploring ideas for building a personal mindfulness practice. Participants will enjoy a 45 minute breathing and yoga for stress reduction session.
Dress comfortably and bring a beach towel or yoga mat. All other materials will be provided.
7-02-18 Decreasing Student Behavior by Increasing Student Engagement- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 for Non Member Districts
When students with disabilities display behaviors that make instruction difficult, engagement in tasks becomes even more difficult. As professionals we struggle with an understanding of how to begin to engage them in instructional practices. What we do not often understand is that the behaviors could be due to the lack of student engagement. During this training we will take a look at how student engagement and behaviors effect each other. Participants will learn strategies for increasing student engagement and decreasing student behaviors.

7-9-18 Teaching to Remember: Developing Academic Vocabulary- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
This session will explore how the brain learns and remembers new words through stages of building long-term memory. Participants will engage in strategies at each stage: encoding, storage, and retrieval creating a toolbox that will aid them in planning and assessing academic vocabulary.
7-9-18 Algebra Progress Monitoring- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
Are you looking for tools to help you gauge where your students are and how they are progressing with respect to essential skills in the Algebra classroom? If so, then this training is for you! Project AAIMS (Algebra Assessment and Instruction: Meeting Standards) is a project funded by the US Department of Education with the purpose of developing algebra assessment tools that can be used for monitoring the progress of students with and without disabilities as they learn algebra. Outcomes of this training include:
- Develop understanding of progress monitoring
- Know how to administer, score, and use data from three (3) different measures
- Understand the relative merits and weaknesses of each of the measures
- Consider issues related to implementing algebra progress monitoring.
To ensure fidelity, participants of this training may use the probes with their classes ONLY. They may NOT share the probes with others or train other teachers to use them. Participants will be asked to sign a User Agreement at the training.
Participants will be given a flash drive with containing all materials. Please bring a laptop or device with a USB port to the training.

7-10-18 Social Detective, Superflex®, and Friends Take On Social Emotional Learning- $35 Fee for Member Districts, $75 for Non Member Districts
This workshop day will focus on how to use strategies in the core curricula You are a Social Detective! and Superflex®. Participants will explore how to use these and other tools to foster social attention and self-regulation in developmentally appropriate ways for students in kindergarten through middle school. Connections between the Social Thinking concepts and the State Standards will be discussed, including how these
concepts integrate with Social Emotional Learning, and the interrelationships with Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports (PBIS). This interactive workshop
will be filled with creative group activities to help students move from being ‘Me’ thinkers to ‘We’ thinkers! All participants will receive a copy of You are a Social Detective! and Superflex® as part of their registration fee.

7-10-18 Effective Strategies for Teaching Algebra
The focus of this workshop is on research-based strategies for teaching Algebra to middle school and high school students. Participants will have the opportunity to explore how these strategies might help students develop algebraic thinking and be used to address misconceptions along the way. There will be time to create personalized tasks and materials based on the strategies.

7-12-18 Teaching Fraction Sense to Students with Mild to Moderate to Severe Disabilities
This professional learning opportunity will support participants in learning hands-on ways to teach fraction sense to students with mild to moderate to severe disabilities. Topics to be covered include; understanding what a fraction is with a focus on whole, fraction models, fraction reasoning, and partitioning and equivalence. Participants will develop and make materials to use in their classrooms. This training is extended on Friday, July 13 with a separate registration, to Fractions and Beyond.
7-13-18 Teaching Fraction and Beyond to Students with Mild to Moderate to Severe Disabilities- No Fee for Member Districts, $75 for Non Member Districts
This professional learning opportunity is an extension of Fraction Sense on July 12. Participants are required to have attended the July 12 session to attend this session. For students to be able to make sense of operations with fractions and other applications they have to have first developed fraction sense. This session will follow up to fraction sense by supporting teachers in learning hands-on strategies to teach students with mild to moderate to severe disabilities application of fraction knowledge. Topics to be covered include; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions, proportional reasoning, similarity, and scale drawings. Participants will develop and make materials to use in their classrooms.
7-16-18 Standards with Stars: Mathematical Modeling in High School – No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
Many of the Kentucky Academic Standards at the High School level have a star (★) next to them. What’s that star all about? What does it mean for teaching those standards? The star indicates a Modeling Standard. This workshop will explore the process of mathematical modeling and provide guidance on the implementation of modeling tasks. Resources will be shared and teachers will be engaged in the modeling process.
Participants should bring an electronic device AND have access to their course material (either hard copy or digital).
As a follow-up to this training, a second day will be scheduled in the fall for participants to come back and begin working on creating usable tasks for the classroom. For those who participate in BOTH days, in-school follow-up will be provided by the trainer.
7-17 annd 7-18-18 Pass 2 Day Initial Training- No Fee for Member Districts, $35v Fee for Non Member Districts
The PASS program is founded on the belief that children with emotional and behavioral disabilities benefit behaviorally from educational experiences with non-handicapped peers and academically from participation in the general curriculum. Designed by a behavior specialist and a licensed psychologist who together have over 40 years of educational experience, PASS was developed to provide students with serious emotional disturbance individualized programming that incorporates “best practices” in serving youth with challenging behavior. Program methodology focuses on teaching/coaching students to behave appropriately in general education or resource classrooms with the help of a teacher trained as a Behavior Coach to support both general education teacher and student in a mainstream classroom. This program will help close the gap by having students obtaining the core content from a highly qualified teacher and the behavior coach to support the social emotional challenges.
7-19-18 Increasing Literacy Access. Book adapting for students participating in Alt Assessment- No Fee for Member Districts, $75 Fee for Non Member Districts
Participants will learn ways to provide access to literacy for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Participants will be provided adapted versions of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and instructional activities across content areas. All attendees will make and leave with multiple instructional activities and adapted versions of the book. SLP CEU’s and EILA will be applied for.
7-20-18 Explicit Instruction Overview- No Fee
Join us for this professional learning opportunity to explore the principles behind effective explicit instruction, which has been shown successful with all learners. In particular, it is considered a fundamental practice of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI). Participants will have the opportunity to explore connections to specific content and leave with an action plan to consider next steps
7-20-18 Increasing Literacy Access for ALL Students. Developing Instructional Materials Around an Adapted Book for Students on Alternate Assessment- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
This session is a continuance of Adapting Books on July 19. Participants attending July 20 MUST have attended July 19.
This follow-up session to the book adapting on July 19 will allow participants to learn how to develop instructional materials around an adapted book. Participants will be given time to work with others to develop additional curriculum resources for the adapted version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Participants need to bring a computer to work on.

7-23-18 Job Coaches: Strategies for working with Students with Complex Needs- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
This professional learning session will be an informative session for school district Job Coaches, Employment Specialists, Transition Consultants and High School Special Education Teachers who work with students with Complex Needs. Students with complex needs have a high rate of unemployment after exiting high school due to the level of supports needed. Often these students are not in competitive employment or in a job that interests them. This session will support school district staff to learn how to best support students with complex needs to look for jobs, to prep for jobs, to develop resumes, to participate in interviews, to self-advocate, and to remain competitively employed all while meeting their needs related to their disability. It is recommended that job coaches attend with their high school special education teachers but is not required.
7-25-18 Use What They Got!: Building Better Relationships to Engage and Empower Students- No Fee for Member Districts, $35 Fee for Non Member Districts
Have you ever wondered how to build better relationships with your students in a diverse classroom? Tapping into the natural resources that students carry within them daily can help! This session will share research based strategies and activities to aid in building relationships and promote cognitive engagement to empower all students socially, emotionally and academically. Participants will be given time to discuss and plan how to implement strategies within their classroom or school.
7-26-18 Kids in Poverty Learn Differently!: Instructional Practice that Makes a Difference- No Charge

This supportive environment can be established through intentional instructional practices and use of strategies. Are you writing IEPs to primarily meet federal and state compliance requirements? This session will focus on moving beyond compliance to using the IEP to drive instruction and improve individual outcomes for students. Participants will be taken through the process of developing an IEP. Participants are encouraged to bring to the training an IEP, with progress monitoring data from a student on their current caseload .
