1/6/2021 HLPs Session 2 Social/Emotional/Behavioral

This is the second in a five part series of sessions focusing on the High Leverage Practices in Special Education. The series will be divided into the 5 teaching aspects of the HLPs.  This session is scheduled to be in-person at the CKEC training center; however, it may be moved to a virtual format if necessary. 

 

Session Two will focus on the social/emotional/behavioral aspect of teaching. Topics that will be addressed are establishing a consistent, respectful learning environment, providing positive and constructive feedback to guide both learning and behavior, teaching social behaviors, and developing student behavior support plans.

1/7/2021 Alphabet and Phonological Awareness for Emergent Literacy Learners

Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

These monthly work sessions will allow school staff to come together to share how they are teaching the KAS standards to their students participating on AA.  These sessions will provide time for participants to ask general questions about AA as well as being provided time to work with others in their grade bands to share and brainstorm ideas on how to teach the standards.  These sessions will occur the second Thursday of every month.  Registration is required for EACH session. 1/21/2021 Independent Writing with the Alphabet for Emergent Literacy Learners

Early Childhood Literacy Cadre 1/29/21, 2/19/21, 4/9/21

Friday, January 29, 2021 - Friday, April 9, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM

Learning to read and write is an ongoing process that begins long before a child starts school and has long-lasting effects. Oral language development, knowledge of the world around them, and experiences with books and print all profound impact a child’s literacy development. Cadre participants will explore the essential content of early literacy learning, connect best practices to the Kentucky Early Childhood Standards and the Kentucky Kindergarten ELA Standards, plan for implementing best practice strategies in Preschool/K Classroom, use formative assessments to plan intentional learning opportunities, examine tools for progress monitoring early literacy skills, identify developmentally appropriate intervention activities, and design early literacy activities for parent involvement.

2/3/2021 Teaching Geometry to Students with Disabilities – Elementary

In this workshop, we will explore the big ideas of geometric thinking as outlined in the van Heile levels of geometric thought.  This framework is developmental in nature and not grade or age specific. Therefore, special education teachers at all grade levels will find this learning to be applicable in their setting and provide them a lens by which to examine students’ thinking about geometry.  They will be able to use the levels to determine present level of performance, consider annual goals, and sequence instruction.  Additionally, participants will explore concepts using concrete, virtual, semi-concrete, and abstract representations.  Throughout the day, misconceptions, instructional strategies, and technology will be addressed.
