Behavior Change: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly
June 14, 2023 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Erica Price/Sasha Long- The Autism Helper

Virtual

We are all looking for behavior change. Whether you want your child to tell you when he has to go to the bathroom, your student to complete his work more quickly, or your roommate to do the dishes – we are always trying to generate some little changes in other people. Using reinforcement & preventative interventions, we can replace negative behaviors with positive, prosocial, & functional responses. This workshop will offer practical solutions to foster increases in positive, communicative behaviors and decreases in problem behaviors. This session will begin by exploring how to apply these strategies to everyday situations in an applicable and proactive way. This approach will focus on the changing outcomes of behaviors by looking at the entire context and approaching behavior change from a function-based perspective. The key is not only teaching communication, but teaching the right type of communication in order to produce long lasting behavior change. However, we all know – there are those times when things do not go as planned. Learn how to tackle those high-stress situations where no option seems like the right one and all bets are off. This workshop highlights ready to use interventions and real-life scenarios. The concepts can be applied to a wide range of environments.

Peer Support and Peer Network Training

June 19, 2023 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

Erica Price

In Person

Research tells us that peer supports and peer networks can help foster relationships by bringing students together. Peer Support and Peer Network programs involve identifying and equipping a group of peers and a student with significant disabilities to provide ongoing support to each other in or outside of the classroom. All students benefit from these two strategies. Some benefits students with disabilities gain include becoming more efficient communicators, increase participation and academic engagement in the classroom and students’ self-confidence and self-determination are increased by the support they receive from their peers. For typical peers, academics are also enhanced, with research showing that students who were just getting by or even struggling in a class raised their grades by over a full letter grade in classes where they were involved in peer support arrangements.

During this training, school teams (special education teachers, general education teachers, SLP, etc) will learn the steps to developing peer support arrangements and peer networks and spend time developing plans to begin implementing these strategies at the start of the 2023-24 school year.

The PASS program is founded on the belief that children with emotional and behavioral disabilities benefit behaviorally from educational experiences with non-handicapped peers and academically from participation in the general curriculum. This session is developing prior knowledge to enhance your understanding of the PASS program, Positive Approach To Student Success. This is an overview to see if you want to learn more about the program. Participants will explore resources in the area of research that are the foundational pieces of the PASS program.
