9-6 and 9-7-17 Conceptual Building Blocks of Proportional Reasoning- No Fee

Wednesday, September 6, 2017 - Thursday, September 7, 2017

The Conceptual Building Blocks is a series of three modules designed to build a teacher’s capacity to work
with students in various settings. The approach is rooted in a conceptual understanding of key concepts in
middle school mathematics. The objectives are:
1. To build teacher knowledge around the foundational concepts in middle school mathematics
2. To provide strategies for teaching content and differentiating instruction
Jan 2015
3. To develop a conceptual understanding of the core components of proportional reasoning, algebraic
thinking, and geometry
4. To catalyze change within the school through coaching sessions
This module uses the middle school Kentucky Academic Standards around ratio and proportions to focus our
work. We will explore the big ideas of proportional reasoning, including the four stages in the development of
proportional reasoning, discover how to use the concretesemi-concreteabstract sequence of instruction,
explore misconceptions, and much more!
Note: This is a two-day module. Attendance at both days is expected.
There will be follow-up provided by the CKEC Math Consultant (either on-site in the classroom or via
SKYPE). This will be further discussed at the training.

Location: CKEC Training Center
